Tech4Good Challenge: UTAR LKC FES Team Grabs Second Runner-Up in 'Well-Being' Track

A team of students from the Lee Kong Chian Faculty of Engineering and Science (LKC FES) shone at the Tech4Good Challenge, claiming the second runner-up position in the 'Well-Being' track on July 8, 2023, in Batu Kawan, Penang.

Under the guidance of academic supervisor Ir Dr Danny Ng Wee Kiat, the team known as "The Powerpuff Boys" was awarded a cash prize of RM1,000, along with medals and certificates of achievement.

The winning project, titled "Object Detection System with Voice Feedback for Blind Assistance," is a voice-controlled computer vision-based system designed to aid the visually impaired in recognizing nearby objects and capturing their surroundings.

Reflecting on their accomplishment, the team expressed, "Our participation in this innovative competition was driven by the desire to gain experience and acquire new knowledge. We wanted to push our limits and challenge ourselves. Winning this award was a wonderful surprise, considering it was our first time participating in such an event. Our heartfelt gratitude goes to our lecturers for their unwavering support. Recognition from the judges has boosted our confidence to further pursue our research goals."

The Tech4Good Challenge, jointly organized by Vitrox Technologies Sdn Bhd, Vitrox Academy, and UTAR, introduced three distinct track categories: "Well-Being," "Agriculture," and "Sustainability." The challenge aimed to provide a platform for both secondary school and tertiary-level students to showcase their ingenuity and innovative engineering design solutions.
